Weenies roasting on an open fire, Miller High Life tickling the nose

Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial start to summer, traditionally is a time for picnics with lots of food and beer. And for me, this Memorial Day weekend was no different.

I attended The annual Masek Weenie Roast 2005 last night and indulged in far too many meat by-products and washed them down the most refreshing "champagne of beers." (Tracie is convinced that if you put lime in a high Life, it tastes just like a Corona.) I have been fortunate enough to spend a good amount of time with my dear friend Flounder this weekend. To quote her warmly and accurately on the recent McCalla/Masek time shared, "It's how the world should be, but isn't."

We started it off with our date on Thursday (which you should have referenced on her blog) and then had Chipotle AND Cold Stone Creamery on Friday, and then the big sha-bang at her parents digs last night. The party was filled with laughter, cornhole, and most importantly.. high school gossip. Ya know, the good stuff, like...... who is getting married, who is knocked up, who is getting married BECAUSE they got knocked up, who got the clap, who has eating disorders, who is casting spells on who.... you know, the usual.

So after this weekend, I have my list of favorites for the week.

Song: "Counting Train Cars" -Widespread Panic

Movie: Sideways

Food: WEENIES!

Drink: White Merlot

Man: Jude Law

Game: Cornhole.... again

Well, I am on my way to yet another cookout at my uncle's.... which I am sure will prove to be far less fun than last night. Can't win them all.

I couldn't write it better myself

I WAS going to recap my date with Tracie "Flounder" Masek from Thursday night, but she also did on her blog, and I really couldn't have said it better so instead I am just going to send you to hers.

You should be reading hers anyway... it is hilarious.

Thank God I have these few things to get me through my pathetic life

I have been a little down in the dumps lately... to use an expression said by my mother.

Don't get me wrong, I had a great weekend in Chicago (an upcoming post), Megan is finally coming home tomorrow and I have a few vacations coming my way.

Basically I have this aching feeling that comes every other week that is a mixture of sheer panic and a tinge of depression as to where my life is headed. I have a job, but no career. I live in a house.... with my parents. I have a lot of friends... that I pay for. I have a date on Thursday night.... with Tracie Masek. (Actually... there is not a single thing wrong with that last statement. Hot damn is Tracie great date.)

So these are a few of my favorite things this week, a la Julie Andrews, that are getting me through.

Song: "Midnight Show" -The Killers

Movie: When Harry Met Sally

Drink: Vodka and Cranberry with a lime

Man: Patrick Dempsey (If the season finale of Grey's Anatomy wasn't this past Sunday, he could very well be my favorite man until the show is cancelled.)

Quote: "Simply Soup. Hmmmm sounds.... simple." -Elena Nelson while driving by a restaurant in Chicago.

Game: Cornhole (sounds dirty doesn't it)

TV Show: Grey's Anatomy

Sloth

This is an actual conversation with Abby. I am not going to use her real screen name because I don't have permission to post it, so I will tell you a little about my dear friend. She is probably one of the smartest, hardest working people I know, she uses big words, but can still tip back a few blue moons and get blackout drunk with me. I love you Sloth.

(Talking about a guy I used to date)

Yrtle77: I seriously am thinking about him in a longing way, which I hate

Abby: well there's nothing you can really do right?

Abby: yeah, that makes it seem desperate, which i'm not saying it is...but that's probably how it feels to you

Abby: you know?

Yrtle77: exactly

Yrtle77: because I got over him awhile ago

Yrtle77: I think it is because I am a little lonely right now

Yrtle77: and am thinking of him

Abby: yeah...it's kind of like phantom limb pains

Abby: they keep coming back even though your arm is cut off

Abby: oh my god...forget i just said that

Abby: nevermind

Yrtle77: I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT!

Yrtle77: going in my blog

Abby: oh shit....i HATE instant messanger

It's a Blessing to be Irish

Ever since I got back from my personal version of the National Lampoon's European Vacation (by the way, my least favorite installment of the series) I have been feeling closer to my Irish Heritage. So I have been trying to frequent Irish pubs in Columbus, like Brazenhead and Fado in search for a pint of Carlsburg... which someone just told me is not sold in the States anymore. LIES! ALL LIES! I could have sworn my cousin Sean got a pint in Cincy recently. I also have been listening to my Irish drinking song CD that I purchased in Dublin... I am so lame.

So, I have a weekly update of a list of favorites that I have on my AIM profile, but not everyone gets to experience it.... (look at me use the word "experience" like I am describing my updated list as a life changing event for all who read it.... kinda like this blog huh?) And my sister called me out yesterday, because I inadvertantly picked something Irish for all my favorites this week.

So I thought I would bring that format here because my favorites could be something that others could relate to or completely make fun of me for, and it will also keep me updating at least once a week which I sometimes (or always) fail to do.

Favorites of the week:

Song: Wild Rover -Irish folk song
Movie: The Boondock Saints
Bar: Fado
Man: Sean Patrick Flanery
Quote: "A good laugh and a long sleep are the best cures in the doctor's book." -Irish proverb

Due to the constricting nature of AIM profiles I have cut the favorites to only 5 categories, but maybe next week I will add more obessions... because that is what they really are. I get obsessed with something for about a week and then usually find something bright and shiny to be attracted to the next.

Mythical Beast

I actually sat down the other day and wrote out a list of "must haves" for a future boyfriend/fiance/husband. I would like to say I was bored, but I am sure I had a million other things to do. I have this tendency to make unecessary lists.

For instance, there have been many "To Do" lists with mundane and quite explainatory "chores" on them like: "wake up"

Honestly.... do I really need that as a reminder on a piece of paper? Maybe it just feels good to actually get something accomplished while the rest of the list, the more important tasks like getting a career or even washing my car, remain unchecked.

Well my list of the "Perfect Man" as I so clearly headed it consisted of so many different and opposing characteristics that I have described a unicorn,* a mythical beast bread for its skills in magic and perfection.

So if you are out there Unicorn, or Uni as I will call you, please make your way down your rainbow pathway to my door where I will be waiting in robes of gold ready to ride you. Or... uh.... hump....wait .... oops.

* My friend (who will remain nameless, unless they want to come forward and comment) was actually called a unicorn in all seriousness by a guy who wanted to date her. Apparently she had the right stuff for him to check all the points on his list.
